Shanghai’s nightlife has never been the same since Zapata’s opened on Hengshan Rd (in the former French Concession) in early 2004.
It features pure unadulterated Mexican madness nightly with bar top dancing, great spicy authentic Mexican dishes and the biggest choice of Margaritas this side of the Rio Grande. Enjoy a dance with the crowds inside the club downstairs or at the Frida Kahlo bar upstairs. And if you’re looking for a quiet corner, settle down in the garden and become a people watcher.
Open 7 days a week at 5PM and located on the corner of Dong Ping Road and Heng Shan Road, Zapata’s has a fantastic beer garden and two airy floors where you can enjoy our fantastic food or famous Margaritas. Vibrant, welcoming colors recreate the ”cantina” feeling and heighten the “Mexican” experience. Our high bar top with ladders on either side offers a great surface for the excited reveller to dance the night away on the first floor.
Who is Emiliano Zapata? (1879-1919)
Born August 8, 1879, in Anenecuilco, Morelos. Zapata was a mediero (sharecropper) and horse trainer. After being conscripted into the army for seven years and attaining the rank of sergeant, Zapata became president of the village council. In this position he campaigned for the restoration of village lands confiscated by hacendados. His slogan was “Tierra y Libertad.”
Between 1910 and 1919, Zapata continued his fight for land and liberty, rebelling against anyone who interfered with his “Plan of Ayala” which called for the seizure of all foreign owned land, all land taken from villages, confiscation of one-third of all land held by “friendly” hacendados and full confiscation of land owned by persons opposed to the Plan of Ayala.
On April 10, 1919, Zapata was tricked into a meeting with one of Carranza’s generals who wanted to “switch sides”. The meeting was a trap, and Zapata was killed as he arrived at the meeting. Zapata is considered today as one of the true revolutionary heroes of Mexico.
